One of the major roads in San Carlos, near La Fortuna area, will remain closed to vehicles to one of its bridges collapsing.

The Ministry of Transportation (MOPT) has stated that the bridge that crosses the El Palo creek in San Juan de Quesada completely collapsed and will have to be rebuilt from scratch.

The MOPT has also confirmed the importance of this route as an approximate 60,000 vehicles pass through on a daily basis. The road is used by local merchants and tourists heading from the Sarapiqui area to La Fortuna, home to the Arenal Volcano.

The collapsing of this bridge follows a previous structure which partially collapsed in Costa Rica’s northern region as well and left several trailers stranded for at least three days.

The bridge in the San Carlos area will force authorities to close down this route for an undetermined amount of time. Hopefully, the recent billion dollars the government got from a loan for the country’s infrastructure will go to the rebuilding of this bridge in the least amount of time possible.

The MOPT has announced that vehicles going through this area must detour to El Barrio town to reach the San Juan de Quesada area. For heavy cargo and trailers, the detour will be through the town of Muelle in San Carlos.

Authorities are only allowing people to cross the bridge on foot, which has also forced public transportation to coordinate drop offs and pick ups on each side of the bridge.
