The main access road to the South Pacific Region and Coastal towns in Costa Rica still remains controlled and with a limited transit due to damages suffered during the Alma Tropical Storm last May.

For those who are planning on driving to Perez Zeledon or Dominical, keep in mind that traffic is being regulated and access is closed from 6pm to 5am every day.  The road which passes through the Cerro de la Muerte, or Death Hill, was partially destroyed at Kilometer 71 and 102 leaving the road with one lane.

Due to the poor visibility and lack of proper signaling, authorities have closed the road during the night in order to avoid fatal accidents.  The Ministry of Transportation is currently putting up signs that will help drivers pass through during the night.  An exact date as to when this will be ready hasn’t yet been given.

This past weekend a landslide blocked both lanes a few feet away from the current damage at Kilometer 103 which blocked all traffic for almost 18 hours.  Authorities have stated that people will need to wait for at least three more months until the road can be 100% operational again.

Several drivers and transporters have declared that they drive through the area with extreme precaution as the earth is still quite unstable and future landslides are still possible.

Local restaurants and commerce have also suffered due to the decrease in passing vehicles.  The famous Chespirito restaurant which opens for 24 hours and is a popular resting area for truckers and regular drivers has declared a sharp decrease in their earnings.

So if you are planning on driving to San Isidro del General, Dominical or Golfito, be sure to plan ahead and with enough time since the drive can be quite a slow one.
