One of the most popular agricultural fairs in Costa Rica kicked off its 33rd edition yesterday afternoon. The Expo Pococi is held in the town of Guapiles and will continue until September 21st.
The fair is very popular among Costa Ricans as well as among tourists whose number of attendees has started to grow over the years. Visitors as well as locals are typically seen dressed in boots, jeans and a cowboy hat to suit the fair’s theme.
The Expo Pococi started as a way to teach people the importance of rural cattle ranches and agricultural activities. Today, the fair maintains its essence as well as the modern day entertainment.
As it is tradition, the beginning of the fair is official once the cattle are driven into their exhibition areas at the fair. This took place yesterday at 5pm at which the fair was officially inaugurated.
The Expo Pococi has been set up with the traditional fairground rides, over 15 food stands, large “mega-bars” and the 400 cattle. Several cultural activities are also programmed throughout the entire two weeks. The main attraction at the Expo Pococi is the carnival. The carnival will kick off this afternoon at 5pm and will pass through the main streets in Guapiles.
The Ranchero festival is programmed for Monday at 5pm and will have as its special guest the Mexican singer Mariana Fernandez. Other activities will include an ATV Rally, Costa Rican Bullfights (no bulls are killed), equine exhibits, baseball tournament and several other sports.
The closing event of the Expo Pococi will include an international concert by merengue artist, Joseph Fonseca.
